A Puritan myth – laziness

In a society that glorifies productivity and busyness, the idea of being lazy may seem counterintuitive or even frowned upon. However, what if I told you that laziness could actually be a good thing? That’s right, being lazy may have some surprising benefits that you may have never considered before. In this article, I’ll explore why being lazy can be a positive trait and how it can actually enhance your life in ways you may not have expected. So sit back, relax, and read on to discover the hidden advantages of laziness.

Let’s go to church

Puritans were part of a religious movement known as Puritanism that had its roots in the Church of England in the 16th century. Their belief was that the Church of England was too much like the Roman Catholic Church and they wanted to get rid of unnecessary ceremonies and practices that were nowhere to be found in the Bible. You can read more about them here.

Laziness was important to them because in their belief, only those who worked hard were saved by God. And they are far and in between. But nobody knew if they would be the chosen ones, so they would work hard regardless just to show to the others that they were chosen. Sorry, but it’s fucked up! Basically they just worked themselves to death for the sake of what the others thought. Sounds familiar?

Nowadays society

In time, despite the drop in Puritan Christianity, the term lazy became part of our daily vocabulary. It’s now used as a criticism for those who take their time to do things, or enjoy longer breaks, or simply want to enjoy their lives. As opposed to those who start work at 9AM and close at 1AM. This concept might have worked during the industrial revolution when manpower and labor were essential. But one question remains: why do we still apply this concept in 2023?

Laziness is not something bad and it doesn’t mean that those who are lazy don’t work hard. Lazy people are not failures and it doesn’t mean that they won’t achieve anything like we’re told in school. Have you ever stopped to think that laziness is actually something ancestral? That we needed break times in our hunt for food so that we save up on some energy? Even if we don’t need to survive as much nowadays, our bodies still inherit those functions. The art of doing nothing or doing less is a big thing nowadays. Hell, they’re even selling books about it.

5,5 reasons to accept laziness

1. No drama llama

The people that you think are lazy, actually have a great defense system that protects them from many things such as bad news, gossip, negativist people, arguments, etc. They like routine and they stick to it. Their daily life can mean that they come to work, do their hours and then simply leave so that they can enjoy the rest of their day.

2.Focus is your middle name

Lazy people just wake up in the morning. No need to tidy up, no need to shower, no need to do much other than just wake up, get some clothes on and get behind their desks. They are really good at focusing one one thing until it gets done. This is why they tend to fill up their mind with information that is really useful to them. And the only way they can get so dedicated is by implementing systems that help you take care of other tasks.

3. Delegation becomes second nature

If they don’t feel like doing something right now, there’s a great chance that they will delegate it to someone else or move it for later on. There’s no rush in their world and why would it be? Unless they are saving lives, corporations will still continue to make profit. Just because they are not a type A personality, it doesn’t mean that they don’t get stuff done.

4. They are pretty straight forward

If they have a busy day or they are simply not in the mood for something, they will just say no. There are no excuses or added explanations. No is a phrase and we should all take note of that.

5. They get creative

This one has got to be my favorite reason! To get stuff done faster and in a more efficient way, lazy people will always find a creative solution. They don’t want to spend hours fixing a simple problem or monitoring a system. Leave it to them to find a quick and useful solution.

I said 5,5 reasons because the last one might not be a full fledged reason, but it matters still. Being lazy also allows us time to breathe, decompress and figure out if we’re still on the right path. Most of us are used to a frenzy lifestyle where 24 hours seem to never be enough. We run from one thing to the next, we aim for more, we push ourselves and we think that this is the life. But what if it isn’t? What taking it easy is also a way? What if we can avoid burnout, depression or anxiety by just taking things slowly?

You want to learn how to slow down and have more time for yourself? Start getting to know your lazy friends a bit better. Ask them how would they approach a situation and let them give you a piece of their mind. Thank me later!
